It all started when…

The city can feel big at times, but a local neighborhood cafe can make everything feel a bit more connected. Citizens is the place for neighbors to come together over a delicious cup of coffee and a great meal.

While the first Citizens location opened in Chelsea in 2016, the idea to bring a community-based Australian cafe to New York City began a few years prior. Co-founders Justin Giuffrida (hailing from the cafe capital of the world, Melbourne) and Andrew Geisel (from the sunny shores of the Gold Coast) met in New York City while working at a local coffee shop and quickly bonded over their shared Australian culture. Justin’s background in business and Andrew’s creative eye combined to actualize their vision of an authentic Aussie cafe in NYC.

Citizens serves more than just a bangin’ Smashed Avocado Toast—it works to become an integral part of every community it joins. We pride ourselves on really getting to know the regulars and always welcoming new customers to make each moment at Citizens memorable. From local art installations, to movie nights, family brunches and comedy shows, Citizens is the place to enjoy everything your neighborhood has to offer.

We are passionate about serving classic Australian cuisines with an American twist. Citizens believes that food can be both simple and delicious. Using the freshest, local ingredients, Citizens creates memorable meals that are healthy, creative, and, above all, fun to eat.
